OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST, FOUNDER & DIRECTOR

Gemma Kenney

BSc (Hons) MRCOT

I’m a skilled and compassionate specialist Occupational Therapist. Since qualifying in 2006, I’ve worked with a range of patient groups with complex poly morbidities such as elderly care, frailty, stroke, paediatrics, neurology, spinal injuries, and end-of-life care.

I began my career as a community OT, working with adults with long-term disabilities. I built extensive experience designing housing adaptations, prescribing equipment, and training care providers in safe moving and handling techniques.

After several years, I moved into an acute hospital setting, assessing and implementing rehabilitation for people recovering from physical trauma or exacerbated long-term health issues. It was here that I moved into the specialist area of frailty, working with older adults that were experiencing a decline in their physical and cognitive health. During my time in this field, I was involved in setting up an award-winning specialist dementia unit for elderly patients who required an alternative approach to their care and rehabilitation.

In 2020, I moved back into the community as the lead therapist for a specialist functional rehabilitation team. Here I refined my skills in rehab and reablement. Working with adults with long-term physical and cognitive impairments, I designed programs focused on maximising independence and empowering them to gain or regain daily living skills and manage long-term symptoms. I also developed a reablement training course to deliver to care staff and complete research into the power of reablement for managing illness and disability in older adults. I also led the team through its first CQC inspection, and was awarded an ‘Outstanding’ rating as a result.

I have expertise in report writing, policy documentation, financial reporting, business case preparation, and expert witness material. Besides my client-facing role, I have published articles in the OT News, undertaken research and presented findings at conferences, and I recently completed a Master’s Degree module in Advanced Clinical Practice.
